593 Colonic Perforation Following Major Burns: A Systematic Review

Abstract Introduction Major burns complicated by stress ulceration and perforation of the stomach or duodenum is a recognised clinical phenomenon. Colonic in patients seemingly uncommon, overall incidence, signs/diagnosis perforation, intervention required, mortality incompletely described literature. Method We performed systematic review literature on severe resulting colonic during admission. Relevant studies from January 1975 to June 2020 were retrieved MEDLINE EMBASE databases. Patient demographics, total body surface area (TBSA), site management outcome extracted. present case series five major who had perforations our Specialist Burns Centre. Results identified 54 studies, which nine (two seven reports) met inclusion criteria. In most cases, TBSA associated with was ≥ 30% (10/16 patients, 63%) abdomen involved 9/16 (56%). Perforations mainly affected right colon (12/16 75%), usually occurring after second week admission (13/16 81%). Right-sided an increased rate compared left-sided (42% vs 25%). Conclusions The current literature, limited reports, confirms that are rare. related systemic effect burn injuries including sepsis gastrointestinal stasis. have at higher risk developing order prompt early diagnosis intervention.
